Structural Engineering’s Conceptual Structural Design (SE 103) course’s annual design competition was held the last week of spring classes. This year’s project was to design and build a model Sports Center (in 1:120 scale) that considers set strength, stiffness, economy and aesthetic requirements. The competition consisted of twenty-three teams with a total of 112 students. After the models were judged on aesthetic qualities, each was tested for strength and stiffness. The winning model was selected based upon its performance in testing, overall cost, and points earned in the aesthetic judging portion.
This year’s winning teams were:
First Place Team #19 – Alex Santana, Devan Dagley, Kai McPhee,
Ryan Griswold, Pyon Thet
Second Place Team #13 – Brian Aberegg, Tom Colegrove, Aileen Perlas, Christian Repayo, Chad Allen
Third Place Team #9 – Taryn Dunbar, Jason Crispi, Janice Reguyal, Andrew Kim, Kenneth Swanson
Steve Porter, the Undergraduate Lab Coordinator, commented, “With these projects, each year we raise the bar and each year the student rise to the challenge. Their work ethics are outstanding.”
