We have Gilbert (Gil) Hegemier and his UC San Diego colleagues to thank for this fact. In honor of Hegemier's many contributions to UC San Diego, he has been awarded a 2022 Revelle Medal.

A remarkable 16 faculty and research scientists at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering are among the world’s most influential researchers in their fields, according to the 2022 Clarivate listing of Most Highly Cited Researchers in the World. The list highlights individuals at universities, research institutes and commercial organizations who have demonstrated a disproportionate level of significant and broad influence in their field of research.

By using a combination of personalized scans as well as digital designs and 3D printing on a large scale, the LIMBER team believes it could reduce the cost of a prosthesis by anywhere from 50% to 90%, delivering prosthetics much faster to those who need them. Full Story

NSF Awards More than $1 Million to Interdisciplinary Research Team to Study Chronic Low Back Pain
A multidisciplinary team led by researchers at UC San Diego has received $1.2 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create a novel system to study and inform the treatment of chronic low back pain. The work will feature a suite of tools including wearable sensors and machine learning to augment physical therapy evaluation and treatment. The team includes structural engineering professor Ken Loh. Full Story

UC San Diego Physician, Alumni Partner to Provide Prosthetic Limbs for Ukranian Amputees
A young man gets fitted with a prosthetic lower leg and begins to walk without crutches within a few minutes. An older man first walks on crutches, then without, shortly after being fitted with his prosthesis. A younger double amputee was able to walk on crutches within minutes as well. These are three scenes from a video showcasing success stories from a pilot program organized in Ukraine by LIMBER Prosthetics and Orthotics, a company co-founded by two alumni of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. $5M from NSF to Empower Transfer Students to Earn Engineering Degrees
With a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation, UC San Diego is leading a new effort to support low-income transfer students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering. The five-year program, called EMPOWER, will support engineering students at UC San Diego and two nearby community colleges, Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif., and Imperial Valley College in Imperial, Calif., working to eliminate opportunity gaps through comprehensive cohort-based, success-promoting programming and significant scholarships.

The UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering is mourning the loss of Joel Holliday, former director, president and CEO of the Charles Lee Powell Foundation, and ardent supporter of the Jacobs School's mission to pursue engineering for the public good. Holliday died on June 28, 2022.

Student startup LIMBER makes 3D-printed prostheses affordable and accessible
Using this combination of personalized scans as well as digital designs and 3D-printing on a large scale could reduce the cost of a prosthesis by anywhere from 50% to 90% and deliver prosthetics much faster to those who need them. Ph student Joshua Pelz, postdoctoral researcher Luca De Vivo and prosthetics expert Herb Barrack have formed a startup, LIMBER Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc., to commercialize the technology.

Sun and solar panels shine at 40th Research Expo
Nanoengineering master’s student Tala Sidawi had her time in the sun at the 2022 edition of Research Expo. Sidawi took home the grand prize for her work to model how solar panels “breathe” water in real time. Such a model could help researchers design solar panels that last longer and perform better in humid environments, and also cost less to build.

ASCE Pacific Southwest Student Symposium draws students from 14 universities across California and Hawaii to San Diego to compete in civil engineering
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2022 Pacific Southwest Student Symposium took place at the University of California, San Diego March 31–April 2, 2022. At the event, over 800 civil engineering students from 14 universities across California and Hawaii put their academic and project management knowledge to the test participating in annual society-wide competitions including the ASCE Concrete Canoe and ASCE/UESI (Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute) Surveying Competition, ASCE Sustainable Solutions Competition – Tiny House Challenge, and the AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction)/ASCE Student Bridge Competition. Concrete Canoes, Steel Bridges test students' structural engineering savvy
For the first time in 15 years, UC San Diego structural engineering students hosted the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Pacific Southwest Symposium from March 31-April 2, drawing 850 students from 14 universities in Southern California and Hawaii to campus for civil and structural engineering challenges including the Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge competitions. In addition to hosting the regional conference, the UC San Diego Steel Bridge team won first place, clenching a spot at the national competition in May.

Sometimes the challenge inherent in a motion capture project isn’t the tracking itself – it’s integrating every other data source into your digital ecosystem. The ARMOR Lab at UC San Diego is currently working on a new, potentially life-saving sensor technology that might not be possible without the use of Vicon Lock Lab to synchronize the project’s complex data streams. Proposed Updates to Steel Building Standard Could Enhance Earthquake Resilience
Based on the results, documented in a NIST report, and a detailed analysis of the test data, the researchers devised new limits for column slenderness, described in a paper published in the Journal of Structural Engineering last April. The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), a standards organization, has adopted the proposed limits in a draft for public feedback of the 2022 edition of AISC 341, a standard that provides guidance on designing earthquake-resistant steel buildings.
