Prospective Graduate Student Application Information

Ph.D. and M.S. Application for Fall 2020 are CLOSED. 

M.S. and Ph.D. Application for Fall 2021 will open in September 2020.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the UCSD graduate division requires at least a B.S. degree in engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics with an overall minimum grade point average of 3.00. Applications are accepted only for fall quarter. The general GRE test is required; subject GRE test is not required.

Application Fee (non-refundable)

$125.00 for international applicants;
$105.00 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents

Applicants pay the application fee under the section title “begin submit process” and it must be paid using a major credit card: MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover, or JCB Card.

Admission Statistics

For the Fall 2018, the department admitted 191 students into our program and conferred 40 Masters and 6 Ph.D. degrees.

GRE Information

Applicants who are applying for the Structural Engineering Department should take the GRE exam no later than November to insure the timely receipt of score results. Consult the GRE Information & Registration Bulletin for further information at

International students from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate proficiency in English via the TOEFL exam. The minimum TOEFL score required is 85 for the internet-based test (iBt). The minimum score for the IELTS exam is 7. Additional information can be found at

*Applicants will be required to scan and upload transcripts directly into their graduate application when completing their application. Do not send official transcripts until it has been requested by the Department. Official transcripts will be requested when/if you are admitted into our program.
