SE Graduate Student Organization (SE GSO)

The SE Graduate Student Organization (SE GSO) is a graduate student group that plans social events for graduate students and tries to maintain a community within the Department of Structural Engineering. Past events include: Movie Nights, Trivia Nights, Potlucks, etc.

Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA)

Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) exists to advocate the rights and interests of our diverse community, to provide for the enjoyment of social, cultural, and service-oriented events, and for the betterment of academic and non-academic life of all graduate and professional students at UC San Diego.

Jacobs Graduate Student Council (JGSC)

The Jacobs Graduate Student Council (JGSC) is the representative student body of Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego. We represent 2700 graduate students and 6 departments in the Jacobs School of Engineering.

International Students & Programs Office (ISPO)

English-in-Action Conversation Program: Cultural exchange for students to grow more proficient in conversational English. Students are matched with other UCSD students/staff as well as members of the local community.

International Student Orientation and Welcome Programs: During orientation, the ISPO office partners with college coordinators for intentional programming in order to ease the acclimation process for incoming international students.

Triton Edge Program: Intended for incoming international freshman students, this program entails 5 weeks of rigorous academics, intentional programming and allows for early acclimation for students prior to orientation.

Grad Life is a resource hub for all UC San Diego graduate students. The Grad Life website and social media accounts are managed by the Grad Life Intern, a current graduate student working out of the Graduate Division.

The Zone

The Zone is a lounge for students that features free programs such as yoga, meditation, Zumba, therapy dogs, and cooking demonstrations to help you achieve your optimal well-being.

CAPS (Counseling & Psychology Services)

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides counseling to undergraduate and graduate students. They meet with students, couple, and groups to help with a variety of problems including depression, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, social and romantic issues, study skills and time management, among other issues. They also provide crisis intervention. CAPS have a large number of providers, some of whom provide therapy in different languages, including Mandarin, Spanish, Farsi, Cambodian, Japanese, Nepali and Hebrew. Our services are free of charge and are confidential.

Student Health Services

Student Health Services (SHS) provides quality primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray. We have primary care physicians who are board certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine. Some of our physicians also have additional training and expertise in Gynecology, Sports Medicine, Rheumatology, Urgent Care, and Mental/Behavioral Health.

CARE at the Sexual Assault Resource Center

CARE at the Sexual Assault Resource Center: UC San Diego's confidential advocacy and education office for sexual violence and gender-based violence (dating violence, domestic violence, stalking).

Athletics and Recreation

Athletics: UC San Diego sponsors 23 intercollegiate men's and women's sports at the NCAA Division II level. The Tritons compete primarily in California Collegiate Athletic Association, widely regarded as the premiere conference for D-II athletics.

Recreation: Opportunities abound for every student’s interest and ability level.

Sports Facilities: Works with Athletics, Recreation, student and staff organizations, and the community to maintain and schedule over 100 sports facilities — and to provide support services for special events that improve the quality of life on campus.

Center for Mindfulness

Center for Mindfulness (CFM) is a multi-faceted program of professional training, education, research, and outreach intended to further the practice and integration of mindfulness and compassion into all aspects of society.  

Center for Ethics and Spirituality

The Center for Ethics and Spirituality provides students with secular counseling, discussion, and education programs relating to spiritual, moral, and ethical issues and questions that may arise within the UCSD community of students, scholars, workers, and campus affiliates.

Student Veterans Resource Center

The Student Veterans Resource Center is committed to ensuring that military affiliated students successfully make the transition from the military environment to campus life, and are assisted in their progress toward completing their academic degree.  In collaboration with other University partners, the SVRC seeks to identify and mitigate the barriers to academic success that are specific to the military affiliated student community.

Raza Resource Center

The Raza Resource Centro team is committed to our student’s success and we work collectively to meet the needs of our students. The Centro is a lively space where students study, meet, write, get tutoring, and most importantly are in community.

Black Resource Center

The Black Resource Center is a Campus Community Center that serves everyone at UC San Diego while emphasizing the Black experience. The UCSD Campus Police provides escort service (someone to accompany you) to and from campus locations every night.

UC San Diego ARCH Housing consists of six apartment complexes:

Coast Apartments, La Jolla Del Sol, Mesa Residential Apartments, Single Graduate Apartments, and One Miramar Street , and the Rita Atkinson Residences.

Off-Campus Housing Options

Living in San Diego, especially in La Jolla, is very expensive and it is important to set a realistic budget before beginning to look for a place to live.

Vacancy rates are very low in San Diego and it may take some time to find an apartment.

Be prepared to pay a security deposit equal to one month’s rent (which may be refunded upon leaving) in addition to the first month’s rent.

UC San Diego Off-Campus Housing Directory
UC San Diego's Off-Campus Housing Directory is a rental referral and housing information resource center with listings of apartment, house, and condominium rentals, available in a variety of areas around campus and the San Diego community. Roommates and room rentals are listed online. The Off-Campus Housing Directory is an excellent resource for waitlisted students.

In order to access the Online Housing database, you will need to input your student information. If you are not a student yet, email offcampushousing@ucsd.edu to request a log-in and password.

This form is NOT a survey (i.e. our goal is not to achieve a high response rate). This is an ongoing resource for graduate students to submit anonymous and/or confidential information -- either positive or negative -- about your lab culture, your relationship with your mentor, or anything else you might be struggling with or celebrating in your education. You can leave your name if you'd like a follow up, or you can submit anonymously. The form responses will be read by myself (as Associate Dean for Students), and will be kept confidential to the extent possible (please read the information at the top of the form for details).

The Dean's office will use information we receive to better understand students' experience and to implement programs or changes to improve students' experiences here in the Jacobs School.  

Office of the Ombuds

The UC San Diego Office of the Ombuds provides confidential, neutral, and informal dispute resolution services for the UC San Diego community. Its services supplement, but do not replace, other administrative processes at the University. The office works to facilitate communication and assist parties in reaching mutually acceptable agreements in order to find fair and equitable resolutions to concerns that arise at the university.
