In a remarkable recognition of decades of groundbreaking research, Distinguished Professor Jiun-Shyan (JS) Chen received the 2025 John von Neumann Medal, the highest honor awarded by the United States Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM). Reserved for individuals, whose contributions have significantly shaped the field over the course of their careers, the medal is awarded only once every two years during the USACM National Congress.
Professor Chen is renowned for his influential work in computational mechanics, particularly in developing advanced meshfree methods and multiscale modeling techniques that have transformed how engineers simulate and understand complex materials and structures. His research has bridged theoretical innovation with real-world applications, earning him international acclaim.
This latest achievement adds to a growing list of honors, including the 2024 ASCE Raymond D. Mindlin Medal, which recognizes outstanding contributions to applied mechanics. Professor Chen’s continued leadership in the field is a source of pride for the UC San Diego Structural Engineering community and an inspiration for future generations of scholars.
