Interdisciplinary Teams Win Three Data Storage Awards from Western Digital
Researchers from UC San Diego received three Western Digital Petabyte Innovation Quest (Peak) awards for pursuing innovative data storage projects. The research teams were each awarded 1.2 petabytes of data storage — that’s more than a million gigabytes — to advance fusion energy; spatial genomics; and preserve cultural heritage sites in 3D. UC San Diego Engineers Lead $5M DOE Center to Design Impact-Resistant Metamaterials
Researchers at UC San Diego were selected for a $5 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) to lead a Focused Investigatory Center aimed at developing a new class of impact-resistant materials. Full Story

Engineers Shake Tallest Steel-framed Building Ever Tested on an Earthquake Simulator
A 10-story, 100-foot structure experienced simulations of real earthquakes, including the 6.9 magnitude, 1989 Loma Prieta temblor, as part of an effort to determine if height limits for buildings made of cold-formed steel could be increased. Full Story

Phuong Truong has done it all at UC San Diego: from an undergraduate student in structural engineering, to master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering and now an adjunct lecturer and education specialist, Truong has been a strong presence at the Jacobs School of Engineering for more than a decade.
