The Student Survival Guide for Structural Engineering at UC San Diego

UCSD offers a variety of additional resources for students.

Academic Resources:

Teaching and Learning Commons: Make an appointment to meet with a learning strategist through the Commons as well as utilize content tutoring, supplemental instruction, and learning strategies resources.

IDEA Center Engineering Learning Communities: Weekly 2-hour problem-solving sessions with a peer educator related to Chem, Phys, Math, and Statics and Dynamics. Study groups vary per quarter.

Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS): OASIS provides a variety of services including tutoring programs via appointment and via workshops including workshops related to the lower division courses in math, chemistry, and physics related to the SE major.

Math-Specific Resources: The Department of Mathematics keeps a list of options for math tutoring including specific resources for MATLAB (Math 18, 20D).

Chem 6 Help Room: TAs and Tutors in the specified Chemistry 6A-B-C classes on the chart do not hold office hours, but instead are part of the team coverage of the Help Room. Students may seek assistance at Help Room from any TA or Tutor affiliated with a particular course number.

Students are also encouraged to reach out to their course instructor/TAs, Faculty Advisor, SE Undergraduate Advisor, and college advisors for additional support.

Personal Support:

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS):

CAPS has nearly one dozen locations and embedded staff across campus. All requests begin with a phone consultation (858-534-3755) during which a variety of services can be accessed, including single drop-in appointments, urgent appointments, recurring sessions, group classes, chronic and specialized care (e.g. disordered eating, addiction services, etc.) and online resources.
Online appointments are available through LiveHealth Online. This tele-mental health service provides secure, online video visits with board-certified, licensed mental health professionals. The service is covered by UC SHIP, and no referral is needed.
Through the iFlourish initiative, all students also have access to free online, interactive resources. Therapy Assistance Online (TAO) facilitates students’ self-care for anonymous help with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns through interactive tools and exercises.

UCSD Extension test prep classes: Classes to help prepare for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT and free for full-time UCSD students on a limited basis via the Student Grant Program

Summer Training Academy for Research Success (STARS) is an eight-week summer research academy for community college students, undergraduate students, recent college graduates, and master's students. Opened to all disciplines, STARS offers student participants a rigorous research opportunity with esteemed UC San Diego faculty, informative transfer and graduate school preparation workshops, and educational, cultural, and social activities; check their website for the application's deadline.

UC Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees (LEADS) prepares promising undergraduate students for advanced education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This two-year program is designed to identify educationally or economically disadvantaged undergraduates enrolled in UC San Diego who are likely to succeed in graduate school and to provide these students with undergraduate educational experiences that will prepare them to assume positions of leadership in the industry, government, public service, and academia following completion of a doctoral STEM degree.
