Speaker Bio

Stefano Mariani is a Senior Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) at the University of Bologna, Italy, and an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, UK. He earned his PhD in Structural Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, in 2015. After his doctorate, he joined Imperial College London as a Research Associate in Mechanical Engineering, before stepping outside academia to work as a Senior Research & Development Engineer at Guided Ultrasonics Ltd., London, UK. He later returned to academia in his current role at the University of Bologna. His research focuses on non-destructive evaluation, structural health monitoring, and the use of ultrasonic guided waves for these applications.

This seminar will present two distinct contributions in structural engineering. The first part introduces a new Semi-Analytical Finite Element formulation that extends existing methods to handle periodic structures, enabling accurate modeling of metamaterial-inspired designs and vibration control applications. The second part focuses on a data-driven technique for compensating temperature effects in structural health monitoring (SHM), using multiple regression and/or deep learning to reveal subtle signs of damage that would otherwise be masked. Each part will provide insights into different challenges and solutions in structural analysis and monitoring.
