Large Scale 3D Printing - Past, Present and Future Prospects
April 16, 2025 - 12:00 pm
Speaker: Berok Khoshnevis
Every year, countless new innovations are introduced; however, truly disruptive technologies arise only rarely. When they do, they often create groundbreaking impacts and trigger a cascade of transformative changes across their application domains. This presentation offers an exploration of construction 3D printing technology—its origins, evolution, and envisioned future—as recounted by the speaker, a pioneer who embarked on this journey three decades ago. What started as a mere curiosity has blossomed into an entirely new industry with immense promise in the construction sector. The talk will provide a historical overview, review current advancements, and examine future prospects, focusing on construction 3D printing applications across terrestrial, underwater, and planetary environments with a focus on academic research opportunities.

Structural Design in Tesla Time- the New Paradigm
Speaker: Dr. John Osteraas
The Tesla Gigafactory being built near Reno, Nevada is currently the largest building project in North America and when completed will be the largest building in the world. Design and construction are proceeding with unprecedented speed to keep pace with the rapid emergence of zero-carbon vehicles. The innovative performance-based seismic force-resisting system consisting of mechanical fuses and rocking strongbacks was designed, detailed, fabricated, and erected before interior floor areas and manufacturing equipment layout were completed. The robust lateral system has been designed to a

Design and Construction of Cowboys Stadium: AT&T Stadium - 'The House that Jerry Built'
Speaker: Larry Griffis, Senior Principal, Walter P. Moore and Associates, Inc.
If its hole-in-the-roof design defined the old Texas Stadium, the twin monumental steel arches have emerged as the signature element of the new Cowboys Stadium. The arches soar through the interior space of the stadium reaching an apex almost 300 feet above the field and spanning nearly a quarter of a mile – longer than any other roof span in the world. These two trusses are the backbone of the stadium.
